Surimi exports of Vietnam soared 37% in the first 5 months of the year

Currently, Vietnam exports fish cakes and surimi products to 39 markets around the world. In which, Korea, Thailand, China, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Belarus and Taiwan are the 8 single markets that import the most fish cakes and surimi from Vietnam, accounting for 88% of the total export value.
Korea is currently the largest import market for fish cakes and surimi of Vietnam. After a decline in Vietnam’s imports of fish cakes and surimi in 2020, South Korea’s imports in 2021 tend to be unstable. The export value of Vietnam’s fish cakes and surimi to the market in the first 5 months of 2021 is equivalent to the same period in 2020, reaching more than 34.3 million USD.
Similarly, Thailand also tends to increase imports of fish cakes and surimi from Vietnam in 2021. In the first five months of 2021, the country imported more than US$34.2 million worth of Vietnamese surimi, an increase of 83% compared to the same period of 2020. The share of this market in Vietnam’s total exports of fish cakes and surimi increased from 16% to 22%.
Vietnam’s exports of fish cakes and surimi to China are also maintaining their growth momentum, reaching $22 million in the first five months, up 14% over the same period in 2020.
Russia, Malaysia, Belarus and Taiwan are also increasing imports of fish cakes and surimi from Vietnam. Notably, exports to the Belarusian market grew strongly. In 2020, Belarus was only a small import market, but in 2021, with a “galloping” rate of 8,148% over the same period, this country is the 7th largest import market of Vietnamese surimi.
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the seafood consumption market, but fish cakes and surimi products are easy to process and therefore popular with consumers who do not know much about processing. seafood. Therefore, the Covid-19 pandemic also increased consumption demand for fish cakes and surimi products in most markets. Currently, a number of markets have controlled the disease after conducting expanded vaccination, so the seafood market has begun to recover. It is forecasted that the market for fish cakes and surimi will continue to be better. However, according to reports from fishing grounds, the catch will decrease, so the supply of fish cakes and surimi will decrease. And this will be an opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to expand the market if they can take the initiative in the source of raw materials.
